By Guest Opinion,
Dan Merchant is an Oregonian who created the new full length movie “Lord Save from Your Followers” which has been touring the nation this summer. It is a combination of a documentary, comedy, and at times a very hard hitting commentary on pop culture and church culture. It has been highlighted by USA Today and Good Morning America.
The movie succeeds on two points. First, the movie is a highly professional and entertaining mix of animation, celebrity quotes and vivid imagery not always found in either start-up documentaries or in Christian themed films. Second, the movie has several deep compelling messages that strike to the heart of how the modern church communicates to the modern world. Nothing is hidden from Merchant’s examination of the state of America’s religious affairs.
The film is available for a church screening. Local congregations should take advantage of having this emerging and promising producer in their own backyard by inquiring about a preview screening.
I saw the movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have to agree with the films overall message that the fragmented church is sending a disjointed message with regard to what the body of Christ is about and what its purpose is. Bono (the lead singer for U2) sums it up wonderfully by saying that “we need to quit asking God to bless what we are doing and get involved with what He is doing… which is already blessed…)
