A kinder, gentler atheism?

July 23, 2009

Byron McCane of The State Newspaper makes this observation about the sudden rise and decline in the Atheism trend and what have contributed to it;

“Has something gone wrong with the new atheism? For awhile, it was really on a roll. Several best-selling books aggressively attacked religion, calling it a “delusion” (Richard Dawkins), and a “spell” (Daniel Dennett) that “poisons everything” (Christopher Hitchens). Bill Maher’s movie “Religulous” warned that humankind must get rid of religion or die. New atheism looked like the wave of the future. But not anymore. “Religulous” got mixed reviews and disappeared quickly. Rebuttals to Dawkins, Dennett and Hitchens have appeared, culminating with Karen Armstrong’s new book, The Case for God. Sales of atheist books have fallen off the charts, literally. Months have gone by since one appeared on the best-seller list.

Why did the new atheists falter so quickly? Because they ignored important facts about religion in America today.” Read full article here.

This atheist still looks forward to the complete eradication of religious stupidity from this planet.

bobxxxx July 23, 2009

When Muslim idiots stop flying airplanes into building, and when Christian idiots stop trying to dumb down science education, I will ignore religious retards.

Les July 23, 2009

boxxx might enjoy perusing the book “What If the Bible Had Never Been Written?”

Les July 23, 2009

Sorry, that’s bobxxx, not boxxx. I still think he would enjoy taking a look at the book.

burtrem redneck July 23, 2009

Bob, I only hope that religious stupidity doesn’t blow up the planet first. Intellectual honesty, reason and logic will prevail.. I have “faith” in that.

Shane July 23, 2009

Sorry, Les. If the Bible had not been written, it would not mean the end of art, architecture, music, or society. Only the most basic laws are even represented in the Ten Commandments and they completely miss so many things (*cough* slavery *cough*). And the “Golden Rule” predates the Bible. Without the Bible there would have been something else. Probably something better. We are still suffering from the superstition and sexual repression the Bible inflicted upon Western society during the dark ages.

If you guys are so all-fired anti-faith, why do you even check in at this post?

D J Wray July 24, 2009

Religion is not the problem. People who are driven by primitive forces are the problem. Some of them are religious, some aren’t.

I’m with bobxxxx (see above).

We’re in the slow crawl of history, evolution. Like it or not. Part of that history and evolution has always been about dealing with the fact that we’re trying to figure out (uh) “what all of this means” while others, in their various ways, try to explain it for us…occasionally killing us if we disagree.

Eric the Green July 27, 2009

It’s not that we are anti-faith, it’s that we are pro-reason.

But in response to this particular article, I wouldn’t say that Atheism is waning at all.

(By the way, New Atheism is something that Faith-Heads made up)

Compare the Quality & the Quantity. It’s harder to speak in complete sentences than it is to fake speaking in tongues.
I’ve read the holey-babble several times, I’m sure I could write at 10 pages an hour considering the fan-base considers doubt a sin. But when you publish a book that goes against the grains, and will be challenged at every turn, then it takes a bit longer in between books. Give it time, there will be more.

A “CASE” for God, don’t make me laugh. This ilk are absolutely worthless. Religion is based on faith, not evidence.

It makes me very said to think about all the resources that are wasted on religion in this world.

valdemar August 18, 2009

Erm, might the supposed decline in atheism have more to do with Americans electing a non-bigot as President? If I were a US atheist I’d have heaved a big sigh of relief last autumn. Just saying…

Lee Picton August 31, 2009

Oh, for pete’s sake, atheism is atheism. All the adjectives applied to it have been made up by the RRR and the accommodationists. The RRR is having terminal hissy fits, because they see the writing on the wall: the end of religious privilege for their ilk, and they do not like it one little bit. So they become ever more spiteful, hateful, and bigoted. That’s great, because the worse they get, the more people are getting sick and tired of them and their idiotic “my way or the highway” approach. It’s time to get over it. Believe any wierd thing you want (planet Kolob, virgin birth, riding a white horse around the world in a single night, turtles all the way down, walking zombies), just keep it to yourself and stop bothering the rest of us with your delusions. Remember your Jesus’ exhortation to pray in the closet. Well, get back into your closet and stay out of my schools and my government. Lee Picton mizlee AT aol DOT com
