Portland Rescue Mission will provide more than 145 men a warm, safe place to sleep tonight. Due to freezing temperatures combined with rain and snow the Mission will further expand their winter shelter by providing mats in the lobby of their Burnside Shelter (111 W. Burnside). The Mission’s winter shelter consistently provides a clean, warm place for up to135 men to sleep each night. The extreme weather shelter expansion will provide an additional 10 men, who otherwise would have been turned away, a place to stay.
Portland Rescue Mission will also provide blankets, coats, hats and gloves to anyone in need as conditions continue to worsen. The Mission supplies thousands of blankets to homeless people throughout the cold weather season. Our blanket supply is nearly depleted and we are asking the community to help by donating new and gently used blankets. We have two drop off locations: Burnside Shelter (111 W. Burnside) and Shepherd’s Door (13207 NE Halsey).
“Cold temperatures combined with snowy conditions take a heavy toll on the health of homeless people. A warm place to sleep makes a huge difference,” says Eric Bauer, executive director of Portland Rescue Mission. “We are pleased to be able to provide a place for 140 men to stay each night. We are committed to maximize our resources to help as many homeless people as possible.”
In addition to emergency services like food and shelter, Portland Rescue Mission’s residential New Life Recovery Ministry assists an additional 120 men, women and children in overcoming homelessness and addiction.
