“Hippie Kitchen” activist to speak at UofP on poverty

University of Portland will host activist, author, and cook Jeff Dietrich at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24. Dietrich will present “Broken and Shared: Tales from a Hippie Kitchen.” The presentation, free and open to the public, will be held in the Executive Boardroom on campus, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd.For over 40 years, Dietrich has lived in community at the Los Angeles Catholic Worker House in solidarity with the poor. Through his efforts, three million meals have been provided to the homeless on L.A.’s Skid Row. He is the author of “Broken and Shared: Food, Dignity, and the Poor on LA’s Skid Row,” which is comprised of thought-provoking essays.
