God’s Not Dead film surprises at box office

From God’s Not Dead Official Blog

You may have heard God’s Not Dead was an incredible success this last opening weekend. It wouldn’t be possible without you, our fans, so we want to say a BIG Thank You!! Here’s just some of the press coverage we’ve gotten below:

Moviefone: ”Take that, Friedrich Nietzsche. The biggest surprise this weekend at the box office was not the success of “Divergent,” which was widely expected to be the far-and-away frontrunner (and was, with an estimated $55.0 million). Nor was it the weak opening of “Muppets Most Wanted” (debuting at No. 2, with an estimated $16.5 million). Rather, it was the movie that opened in fifth place, “God’s Not Dead.”
Breitbart: “God’s Not Dead didn’t have a massive marketing budget, a liberal A-list star above the title or even the same number of screens most mainstream movies receive. The film is still on pace to snare the fourth spot in the weekend’s box office chart in a very competitive frame.LA Times: ”The religious drama ‘God’s Not Dead’ surprises at box office. The film, which opened on just 780 screens nationwide, took in more than $2.8 million Friday. It’s likely to be the No. 3 >movie for the weekend, behind the bigger-budget, wider-released “Divergent” and “Muppets Most Wanted.”

Huffington Post: “God’s Not Dead Keeps Its Message Alive… God’s Not Dead is not a movie that will appeal to everyone. It is definitely aimed at Christian believers. Still the dramatic context of the script and the talent of the cast could make it entertaining for anyone.”

Variety: ’Divergent’ Dominates With $22.8 Million Friday, ‘God’s Not Dead’ Surprises at No. 3 ”Despite “Divergent”s box office domination, the surprise winner this weekend is “God’s Not Dead.” The low-budget faith-based film earned $2.8 million on Friday at 780 locations, putting it on track for an $8.5 million weekend. With a per-screen average of $3,590, the pic, which includes cameos from “Duck Dynasty’s” Willie and Korie Robertson, clearly appeals to underserved faith-based audiences.”

USA Today: “The biggest surprise of the weekend was God’s Not Dead, the independent religious film released on only 780 screens. The movie, starring Kevin Sorbo in the tale of a college freshman wrangling with faith, did $8.6 million, taking fifth place.”

The Christian Science Monitor: ”This weekend, the little-known and small-budget “God’s Not Dead,” a narrative about a Christian college student who must defend his faith in front of an aggressive philosophy professor who makes each of his students sign a pledge affirming that God does not exist, took in more than $8.5 million Friday through Sunday – a surprising fifth-place in this weekend’s box office numbers.
