George Fox, Willamette professors debate topic, ‘Did America Have a Christian Founding?’

Mark David Hall and Kevin K. Green will discuss subject on successive Thursday nights in September

George Fox University and Willamette University are co-hosting a two-night debate on the topic “Did America Have a Christian Founding” on successive Thursday evenings in September. The public is invited to both events at no charge.

The debate will feature Mark David Hall, the Herbert Hoover Distinguished Professor of Politics at George Fox, and Steven K. Green, a professor in Willamette University’s School of Law.

Hall and Green are among the nation’s leading experts on the relationship between church and state in America. Hall’s recent books include Roger Sherman and the Creation of the American Republic (Oxford, 2013) and Faith and the Founders of the American Republic (Oxford, 2014). Green’s recent books include The Second Disestablishment: Church and State in Nineteenth Century America (Oxford, 2010) and The Bible, the School, and the Constitution (Oxford, 2012).

The opening debate is scheduled from 7 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, in Room 105 of George Fox’s Hoover Academic Building. The second session is set from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, in Room 121 of Willamette’s School of Law, 245 Winter St., in Salem, Ore.

A question-and-answer time will follow the discussions both evenings.

The series is sponsored by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute and cosponsored by the William Penn Honors Program of George Fox and Willamette’s Center for Religion, Law & Democracy.
