A C.S. Lewis scholar from St. Benet’s Hall at Oxford, England, will speak on the George Fox University campus as a guest of University President Robin Baker and the school’s William Penn Honors Program at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 9, in Room 105 of the university’s Hoover Academic Building. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, and the public is invited to attend free of charge.
Jason Lepojärvi, a junior research fellow in theology at St. Benet’s Hall, Oxford, and a former president of the Oxford C. S. Lewis Society, will speak on the topic “C.S. Lewis’ Famous Disagreement with Augustine on Love.”
Born to a Canadian mother and a Finnish father, Lepojärvi studied theology and philosophy at the University of Helsinki. His master’s thesis (2008) on the theology of the body and sexuality by John Paul II was later published as the first introduction to the subject in Finnish (2012), and his doctoral dissertation (2015) is on C. S. Lewis’s theology of love.
Lepojärvi is a guest of both the university’s president and the school’s William Penn Honors Program, an alternative liberal arts general education curriculum for undergraduate students that launched in the fall of 2014. Modeled on the Socratic style, it is designed to hone students’ critical thinking skills by exposing them to classical texts and using discussion as the primary mode of instruction.
Students interested in learning more about the honors program are invited to a reception immediately after the lecture in the same location. In attendance will be William Penn Honors Program Director Joseph Clair.
