Christianity Today Honored at The Humane Society of the United States’ 25th Anniversary Genesis Awards
— First William Wilberforce Award given for magazine feature on factory-farming issues
HOLLYWOOD, Calif.—The Humane Society of the United States is proud to announce that Christianity Today won the first Genesis Outstanding Written Word Award dedicated to journalistic excellence on animal protection issues in faith-based publications. The award was given during the 25th Anniversary Genesis Awards weekend celebration.
Christianity Today’s November 2010 cover story, “A Feast Fit for the King,” by Leslie Leyland Fields, won the Genesis Award in the Outstanding Written Word—William Wilberforce Award category.
“The Humane Society of the United States is thankful for Christianity Today’s attention to the issue of factory farming,” said Christine Gutleben, director of The HSUS’ Faith Outreach program. “Fields did an excellent job of presenting the problems associated with industrial animal agriculture and why it should matter to Christians.”
The star-studded affair in Los Angeles pays tribute to major news and entertainment media for producing outstanding works that increase public awareness of animal issues. The two-day celebration included an Outstanding Written Word awards dinner on Friday and a Television and Film awards ceremony on Saturday. Genesis Awards are bestowed by celebrity presenters before an audience comprised of members of the entertainment industry, news media, business and humane communities. Saturday’s ceremony will be televised on Saturday, April 30, on Animal Planet.
Fields said, “I’m truly pleased that The Humane Society of the United States is honoring a faith-based perspective on creation care. I hope this award will help us recognize that the work of compassion and rescue is not about labels or politics—it’s about doing what’s right and good for God’s earth and its creatures. The book of Genesis itself, the namesake for these awards, calls us not to decimate or dominate creation, but to ‘dress and keep it.’ And so we must.”
The William Wilberforce Award recognizes journalistic excellence on animal protection issues in faith-based publications. Wilberforce led the struggle to abolish slavery in Britain and was a founding figure of the animal protection movement. This award seeks to carry on his legacy of compassion.
