A student accused of releasing chemicals in a Portland school cafeteria faces attempted murder and domestic terrorism charge. In early September, a 15-year-old boy at Benson Polytechnic High School mixed chemicals brought from home to create a toxic gas that he released smoke and fumes in the cafeteria. After inhaling the gases, the boy was hospitalized temporarily. He appeared in court charged with 10 counts of attempted aggravated murder, first- and second-degree attempted murder, first- and second-degree domestic terrorism, unlawful manufacturing of a destructive device, unlawful possession of destructive device, unlawful use of weapon and reckless endangering another person.

Months earlier this year a 13-year old student at Faubion Middle School in Portland threatened to shoot and kill fellow students.   A knife was discovered in his backpack.   The student was not removed, forcing some parents to pull their child from the school out of concerns for their safety.
