Archbishop to ordain seven priests
and two others to be ordained in Argentina

Archbishop John G. Vlazny will ordain seven men as priests for the Archdiocese of Portland on Saturday, June 13 at St. Mary’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The Mass of Ordination will begin at 11:00 a.m. This will be the largest ordination class for the Archdiocese since the early 1970’s.

In addition, two other men will be ordained in Argentina. Those being ordained by Archbishop Vlazny are Eric Andersen, Fred Anthony, Mariano Escano, David Jaspers, Theodore Lange, Thomas Layton and Cary Reniva.

Those being ordained in Argentina are Matias C. Perez and Ignacio Llorente. They are members of the Society of St. John, a Society of Apostolic Life. They have both studied at Mount Angel Seminary and have spent time working in parishes in the Archdiocese. They will be ordained on Saturday, July 13 by Bishop Santiago Olivera at Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows) Church in the Diocese of Cruz del Eje in the province of Córdoba, Argentina.

Eric Anderson was born in 1967 in Portland to Stanly J. and Sharon E. Andersen. He is one of four children. He attended elementary schools in Reedville and Aloha, and then graduated from North Eugene High School in 1985. Eric attended the University of Oregon and graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts. He entered Mount Angel Seminary in 2002. He earned a Master of Arts degree in 2008, a Sacred Theology Bachelor degree as well as a Master of Divinity degree at Mount Angel Seminary in 2009. His ministry training has included a summer assignment at Our Lady of the Mountain Parish in Ashland, working with the confirmation class at Christ the King Parish in Milwaukie, ministry at the Oregon State Hospital in Salem, Clinical Pastoral Education at Bergen Mercy Hospital in Omaha, NE. Eric spent a year of pastoral training at St. John the Baptist Parish in Milwaukie. He was ordained a deacon by Archbishop Vlazny on April 19, 2008. He has served weekends at St. Juan Diego Parish in Cedar Mill as a deacon this year.

Fred Anthony was born in 1953 in Coos Bay, OR. He is the son of Fred S. Anthony (deceased) and Kathryn F. Anthony. One of seven children, he attended elementary school at Coos Catholic School in Coos Bay, and graduated from Marshfield High School (Coos Bay) in 1972. Mr. Anthony served in the United States Air Force for twenty years. He was married and has two sons David and Christopher, both serving in the U. S. military. He entered Sacred Heart Seminary in 2003. He graduated from Cardinal Stritch University in May 2007 with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree in Religious Studies. He completed a Master of Theology degree at the Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, WI in 2009.

His ministry training experiences have included assignments at St. Rose of Lima Parish in Portland, St. Mary Parish in Corvallis, field placement at Repairers of the Breach – a homeless shelter, Clinical Pastoral Education at the University of Colorado Hospital, St. Monica Parish in Coos Bay, Queen of Peace Parish in Salem. Fred was ordained a deacon by Archbishop Vlazny on December 15, 2008 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. He has served as a deacon at St. Joseph Parish in Roseburg since January.

Mariano A. R. R. Escano was born in 1974 in Quezon City, Philippines. He is one of four children of Antonio S. and Milagros R. Escano. After attending elementary school in Quezon City, Mariano graduated from St. Anthony Mary Claret High School in Quezon City in 1991. He graduated from the University of the Philippines in 1997 earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. Mr. Escano entered the Divine Word Seminary in Tagaytay City, Philippines in 1998, and graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Pastoral Ministry in 2006. He entered Mount Angel Seminary in the fall of 2006. He completed a Master of Divinity degree at Mount Angel Seminary in May 2008. Mariano’s ministry training has included assignments at St. Vincent Ferrer Parish in Surigao City, Philippines, at the Divine Word College of Legazpi, Legazpi City, Philippines, and at St. Vincent de Paul Parish – the Downtown Chapel in Portland. He was ordained a deacon by Archbishop Vlazny on April 19, 2008 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. He has served weekends as a deacon at St. James Parish in McMinnville.

David L. X. Jaspers was born in Forks, WA in 1977. He is one of 5 children of Philip and Kathleen Jaspers. He attended elementary school at St. Paul School in Eugene and graduated from Marist High School in 1995. David earned the Eagle Scout award in 1995 with Troop 175 in Eugene. He attended Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish.

David worked a number of jobs while in high school and college. Mr. Jaspers served as a full-time volunteer for interpreting, teaching, social work, and pastoral ministry at the Mission Parish Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Chimbote, Peru with the St. James Society. He served as a substitute Spanish teacher at Marist High School in 2001, and worked as a Youth and Family Educator at Northwest Family Services.

While at Mount Angel Seminary, David earned a Master of Arts degree in Scripture and a Master of Divinity degree in 2009. David’s ministry training assignments have included placements at St. Anne Parish in Gresham, St. Monica Parish in Coos Bay, St. Alexander Parish in Cornelius, a pastoral intern year at St. Mary Parish in Eugene, Providence – St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Mission in Chimbote, Peru. David was ordained a deacon by Archbishop Vlazny on April 19, 2008 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. This past year he has served as a deacon on weekends at Christ the King Parish in Milwaukie.

Theodore Lange is one of five children of Theodore C. and Pauline A. Lange. He was born in Salem in 1978. He attended St. Joseph and Salem Heights elementary schools and graduated from Sprague High School in Salem in 1996. He attended Lane Community College and earned an Associate of Arts degree in 1999. Theo worked at St. Jude Parish in Eugene for a year prior to entering the seminary. Theo entered Mount Angel Seminary in 2002, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and Literature in 2004. He moved onto the Pontifical North American College in Vatican City. He attained a Sacred Theology Bachelor degree from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 2007. His assignments for ministry training have included St. John the Baptist Parish in Milwaukie, Christ the King Parish in Milwaukie and Clinical Pastoral Education training at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL. Theo was ordained a deacon on October 4, 2007 at St. Peter Basilica in the Vatican by Archbishop John P. Foley. After ordination as a priest and a summer assignment, he will return to Rome to continue studies.

Thomas M. Layton was born in 1944 in Lawrenceville, IL. He is one of five children of William F. and Lois C. Layton (both deceased). He attended elementary school at Coos Catholic School in Coos Bay and graduated from Marshfield High School in Coos Bay in 1962. He attended Prince Georges Community College in Landover, MD and earned an Associative of Arts degree in Computer Science in 1971. After having worked for the Federal Aviation Administration, he entered the seminary in 2004. Thomas earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies at Cardinal Stritch University, Milwaukee, WI in 2007. He completed a Master of Divinity degree at Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, WI in 2009. His ministry training assignments have included St. Cecilia Parish in Beaverton, St. James Parish in McMinnville and Clinical Pastoral Education at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, MN. He was ordained a deacon by Archbishop John G. Vlazny on December 15, 2008 at St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Cary O. Reniva was born in 1982 in Guinobatan, Albay, Philippines. He is one of five sons of Manuel R. Reniva (deceased) and Nelfa O. Reniva. He attended elementary and secondary school at St. Benedict Academy in Guinobatan. He entered Mater Salultis College Seminary in Daraga, Albry, Philippines in 1999 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classical Philosophy in 2004. He moved to Oregon and attended Mount Angel Seminary and received a Master of Arts degree in Theology in 2008. He earned a Sacred Theology Bachelor degree and a Master of Divinity degree in 2009 both from Mount Angel Seminary. Cary’s ministry training assignments have included All Saints Parish in Portland, St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Salem, Christ the King Parish in Milwaukie. Cary was ordained a deacon by Archbishop Vlazny at St. Mary’s Cathedral on April 19, 2008. He has served weekends this year as deacon at St. Cecilia Parish in Beaverton.

Matias C. Perez and Ignacio Llorente are members of the Society of St. John, a Society of Apostolic Life. The Society was formally constituted by Bishop Omar Felix Colome of Cruz del Eje in Argentina in 2006. Members of the Society worked at Our Lady of the Mountain Parish in Ashland and in campus ministry at Southern Oregon University. Matias and Llorente moved to Corvallis and began their theological studies at Mount Angel Seminary in 2005. They along with Father Lucas Laborde also worked in campus ministry at Oregon State University and in Hispanic ministry.

Ignacio Llorente was born in Seville, Spain in 1978. He is one of four sons of Ignacio Llorente and Maria Lopez Seco. He attended elementary school in Buenos Aires, Argentina and graduated from Escuela Argentina Modelo in 1996. He attended the University of CEMA in Buenos Aires and graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor degree Licencia in Economy. He then attended the University of del Norte Santo Tomas de Aquino where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy in 2004. He was consecrated in the Society of Apostolic Life in February 2005. Ignacio earned a Master of Arts degree in theology, a Sacred Theology Bachelor degree and a Master of Divinity degree from Mount Angel Seminary.

His ministry training has included being an Economy Professor at Los Robles High School and a Religious Education Teacher at Los Robles High School and at Escuela Argentina Modelo School. He spent a pastoral year at Nuestra Señora de Itati, in Escobar, Buenos Aires, Argentina, assisted at the Newman Center in campus ministry at Oregon State University in Corvallis and assisting with a program of evangelization at St. Anne Parish in Gresham. He was ordained a deacon by Archbishop Vlazny at St. Mary’s Cathedral on April 19, 2008. He has served weekends as a deacon at St. Mary Parish in Corvallis. After ordination to priesthood in Argentina, Ignacio will be returning to the Archdiocese of Portland for a ministry assignment.

Matias Perez Constanzo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1977. He is the son of Felix Perez Constanzo and Maria Marta Larroudé. Matias attended De La Salle elementary school and graduated from Los Robles High School in Buenos Aires in 1994. He attended the Catholic University of Argentina in Buenos Aires earning a  Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in 2000 and a Bachelor of Arts degree in
Philosophy in 2003. He completed a Sacred Theology Bachelor degree, a Master of Arts degree in Theology, and a Master of Divinity degree all at Mount Angel Seminary.

He taught elementary and high school in Argentina and served as a teacher of Catechetics in various schools and parishes. He worked with high school and college campus ministry programs in Argentina with the Society of St. John. He has worked in campus ministry at Southern Oregon University in Ashland and at Oregon State University in Corvallis. He entered consecration as a member of the Society of St. John in December 1999. He was ordained a deacon by Archbishop John G. Vlazny on April 19, 2008 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. He served as a deacon at St. Mary Parish in Corvallis this past year.
