Footballer kneels in thanks, gets penalty flag

Cornerback Chris Johnson was given a penalty flag for unsportsmanlike conduct at Sunday’s game against the Texans, for what he describes as simple giving thanks to God.

The San Fransisco Chronicle reported, “The foul: He fell on bended knee and lifted his hands toward the unretracted roof after his end-zone interception just before halftime. The back judge deemed it excessive celebrating and threw his flag.”I’m just getting on my knees giving my respect to God,” Johnson said. “I don’t see how that’s a personal foul or anything like that…Chris Johnson gave the same thanks after his three other career interceptions, all last season, and was not flagged.” Read more:

There are many things you can and cannot do in football.  Throwing a football into the audience is disallowed, and excessive celebration as well.  I am not sure how kneeling and giving thanks falls into it.
