Contemplating religious freedom on Sunday, July 4

By Faith Report — Since this 4th of July falls on Sunday, it’s appropriate to reflect on the special nature of our Republic, a Republic that allows us to freely exercise our religious preferences.

The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776. The Constitution was ratified in 1788 when it replaced the Articles of Confederation.  The First Amendment to the Constitution, passed in 1791, reads as follows:  “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”
