Portland Franklin High School teacher, Mercedes Munoz, has just been awarded Oregon teacher of the year. The award comes with a $5,000 award from the Oregon Department of Education. Munoz described herself as a “a praying woman”. Being a special education teacher is tough position that definitely invites lots of prayer.

She said her goal everyday is to make a difference in a child’s life. Munoz focuses in on building relationships with students, providing high expectations and following through with those expectations.

Mercedes Munoz also said, “To be an anchor in someone’s life, and to tell them that they can make it, and there are other moments to look forward to, that is a special joy that I get in teaching. Our kids come with special trauma. Broken promises, so I can’t be one more person making broken promises.”
