Portland pastor found guilty of abuse for 3rd time

By Oregon Faith News Note,

A former Southeast Portland pastor found guilty of sexual abuse for a third time has been sentenced to 13 years in prison, according to KATU. Although detectives say 72-year-old Michael Sperou abused seven young girls at the Southeast Bible Church in Clackamas County between 1988 and 1996, the Oregon Supreme Court in 2019 overturned two guilty verdicts on technicalities because witnesses were referred to as “victims.” In 2020, a jury found Sperou guilty in an 11-1 verdict, but the U.S. Supreme Court ruled a unanimous verdict is required for serious crimes. In May, jurors found Sperou guilty on two counts of first-degree unlawful sexual penetration.
