In 1998, a Portland youth pastor sexually abused a six-year-old boy, but it wasn’t until Aug. 8 of this year that David N. Duong, 58, pleaded guilty to first-degree sexual abuse and started serving six years and three months in state prison.
Now the Southeast Portland church that employed him—the Vietnamese Christian Community Church Hoi Thanh Tin Lanh Cong Dong—faces a $6 million civil lawsuit filed in Multnomah County Circuit Court on behalf the victim, who says the youth pastor and choir director groomed and then abused him, according to OregonLive.com. Another plaintiff in the lawsuit contends Duong abused him for several years during sleepovers beginning in 1993, when he was nine.
Duong, who isn’t named in the civil lawsuit, worked as an engineer in California before his arrest during an Alaskan cruise last year.
