Oregon religious right case advances

By Oregon Faith News Note,

A ministry in Medford that works with at-risk young people has appealed to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, contending that Oregon state officials discriminated against the Christian organization by pulling previously approved grant funding, according to KDRV.com. Youth 71Five Ministries received money from the state’s Youth Community Investment Grant program from 2017 to 2023. But in 2021, after it submitted the top-rated application for the Youth Violence and Gang Prevention grant, the request for $400,000 was first approved and then denied because the ministry asks employees and volunteers to sign a statement of faith. State officials say the Christian ministry discriminates in employment by requiring people to sign the statement of faith. After a lower court dismissed the case, the Alliance Defending Freedom, which represents Youth 71Five Ministries, appealed its case to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
