Former church becomes shelter

By Faith News Note,

The former St. Stephens Episcopal church in downtown Portland reopened on Aug. 4 as a low-barrier overnight homeless shelter offering up to 100 people a place to sleep between 9 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. The church on Southwest 13th Avenue near Southwest Clay Street has offered homeless services from the building for a  couple of years. Rob Layne of Portland Solutions, which organizes shelters in the city, said they offered tours through the building before its opening as an overnight shelter run by Agape Village. Mayor Keith Wilson has said he wants the city to provide 1,5000 overnight by December, including a 200-bed at Northrup Street and Northwest 15th Avenue in the Pearl District opening in September.
