A sign outside the Clackamas United Church of Christ Church criticized creation in Miami of a migrant detention center, Alligator Alcatraz, and a Facebook post of it has gone viral, according to The Miami Herald. Although the center that opened July 1 is nearly 3,000 miles away, the Protestant church in Milwaukie southeast of Portland posted the congregation’s feeling about it, writing, “It shouldn’t need to be said, but Alligator Alcatraz is in opposition to the teachings of Christ.” Democrats describe the center designed to hold 5,000 people waiting for deportation as inhumane, while Republicans call it necessary for national security.
