A squatter moved into the master bedroom of a pastor’s home in Salem, Ore., and refused to leave until paid $2,500, according to a story in Newsweek. Jennifer and John Chamberlain thought they were helping when they let a woman live temporarily in a shed behind their home while they left to establish a new church before selling their house. But the woman refused to leave when asked and then moved into the bedroom, citing Oregon’s lenient and ambiguous laws toward squatters whenever the Chamberlains tried to reclaim their home. After months of legal wrangling, they finally paid her to leave their home. But House Bill 3522, which passed the Oregon House unanimously, will make it easier for homeowners to reclaim their property and evict any squatters with a 24-hour written notice.
