Oldest black church gets $3M grant

By Oregon Faith News Note,

The oldest Black church in Oregon plans received a $3 million grants from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines to help realize its dream of constructing 44 buildings in the Albina community of Portland to provide affordable housing to veterans and their families, according to The Portland Business Journal. Plans call for demolishing the First African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, which was erected at 4304 N. Vancouver Ave. near Skidmore in 1962, to make room for the new buildings, which will include a smaller sanctuary and offices where services can be provided to veterans. The church, which began in a private home in 1862, is working on the development with Logos Faith Development of Los Angeles, Vancouver-based Access Architecture Firm, and Rivermark Community Credit Union.
