Protest efforts, dismal ratings sink Playboy Club

‘The Playboy Club’ Canceled — Morality in Media’s Efforts Victorious
Morality in Media

WASHINGTON, — NBC “Closed the Club” as a result of dismal ratings and viewer outrage, cancelling a series that glorified the sexual exploitation of women and the Playboy philosophy that women are to be used, abused and then discarded.

“It is great news that the ‘Playboy Club’ is cancelled after just three episodes. Clearly viewers are not interested in supporting the brand that normalized pornography and caused immeasurable harm to women, children and to the men who became addicted to porn.” said Dawn Hawkins, executive director of Morality in Media, organizer of the site www.ClosetheClubOnNBC.com.

According to Hawkins, key NBC advertisers left the show after receiving more than 20,000 emails through Morality in Media’s site www.CloseTheClubOnNBC.com.

“The efforts of Morality in Media, Parent’s Television Council, Gloria Steinem and many others lead to the public outrage and ultimate cancellation of the show,” said Hawkins.

Playboy, once equated with ‘soft-core’ pornography, distributes hardcore pornography on pay TV channels and the Internet. Distribution of hardcore pornography can be prosecuted under federal and state obscenity laws, according to Patrick Trueman, Morality in Media president and a former chief of the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, U.S. Department of Justice, Washington, D.C.

“We’ll use the same public pressure that closed the club to get the attention of the U.S. Justice Department which has not prosecuted one case against pornographers during the current administration,” said Trueman.

Series is in a dyer need of Visionary. Hey Network Have a main sponsor like “Geico” to sponsors the series as NASCAR driver have. Once a series streamed or rented DVD’S then the series sponsors lives on. Winning!
YOUR prime Live viewer or going “Extinct”. Your Audience are in a new era of the” Expanding World of new Technology”, mufti-channel television, steaming etc.
Working the sponsors into the series would be easy. A sitcom like Two Half Men, having Charlie Sheen siting on Allen shoulder along with Geico Lizard reminding him get some INS. Having Lizard running across the bottom of the screen. Maybe next week have Lowe’s sponsor etc. The engineering of modern technology advancement will continue to advance without the Networks merge, of the two they’re surely be death penalty for a lot more series & Networks.
HELLO! Do u think we are gonna throw away the DVR’S go back to watching live?.
When you take away so many shows from the viewers cuz of such a rickety rating system you make enemies. Is that what you want from your viewers? If your reading, you see the growing hatred of the networks. DUDE you’re in a new era! Get a good PR man and go back to the drawing broad and Re event broadcasting.

These protesters are ridiculous! If you don’t like a show, you have an option to not watch that show. No one is forcing you to watch. To be called “pornographic” is outrageous! The actors in the show wore more clothes in a bunny costume than some do on America’s Next Top Model! I don’t see anyone protesting that show. To make claims that porn harms women, children and men who get addicted to it is absurd. Women make a choice to be in that industry and children have nothing to do with it. Men also make a choice to watch or to not watch. Saying the industry is at fault for men being addicted is like saying the earth is responsible for a teenager being addicted to marijuana. I hope a cable network picks up this show. It had great story lines, good actors and an original premise. People who protest this show should get a life!!

Deanne October 8, 2011

It’s the way it was in the sixties… you can’t rewrite history. AND, this show was really good. I spent many a night after work with my coworkers at the New York Playboy Club (and the Gaslight Club). Did I ever want to be a Bunny? Hell no. I had a good job, have always taken care of myself, and wasn’t interested. Was it sexist? Of course it was, and it became a symbol of femminism later… but not then. This show was so like another of my favorites.. Mad Men. Accurate, thought-provoking, interesting. I was looking forward to episodes where the juxtaposition of the club and the emergence of femminism crossed paths, as it did in real life. It was really a good show. I hate that it was cancelled.

Bob October 8, 2011

Wow, just because the name “playboy” was in the title people protest. They probably didn’t even watch an episode. This show was excellent to bad it’s gone and from what I saw it did not exploit women at all.

urula October 8, 2011

glad its been cancelled – thank you to everyone who had a part in this

thank you

nathaniel October 8, 2011

You guys are insane, maybe we should cover up women head to toe in Burkas so as to not offend any of you bible thumpers.

Annie October 8, 2011

Insane!! The people protesting the show are jealous housewives who have let themselves go! Nothing degrading about being a bunny, actually it’s quite empowering to be in control of your sexuality, feeling attractive and desired! Sad that frumpy women’s insecurities have caused a fantastic show (that us women who DON’T feel threatened by other attractive ladies) thoroughly enjoyed! HBO please pick this show up and do it justice!!!

The ‘facts’ of this article are wrong.

When Carol-Lynne finds Maureen in Nick’s apartment she dumps Nick and doesn’t let either of them explain. When Carol-Lynne gets fired for going through employee records she goes above her manager’s head and gets a promotion.

When Janie has problems with Max trying to make her be someone she isn’t she dumps him. She goes to her friends and gets support from them and then doesn’t take his calls.

Brenda is saving money so she can buy herself a house.

Alice is working to help fund an underground glbt movement.

How are these strong self-aware women with goals being ‘used, abused and discarded’?

sarah October 8, 2011

I’m so bummed this is cancelled!!!! I love the show and I’m pretty sure that the bunnies are wearing more clothes than the girls on dancing with the stars. I’m hoping that another network will pick up this show. For once I was excited for a show on tv. With all this reality tv lately I just haven’t looked forward to watching any of it!!!! if you don’t like it don’t watch it!!!! What a bunch of crap!!!!

Josh October 8, 2011

For those saying “if you don’t like it don’t watch it” I say “WE DIDN’T and that is why it’s gone!” If you don’t think something should be on TV don’t watch it to add to its ratings! Duh.

Josh October 8, 2011

Oh, and anyone who thinks that a woman could or should use her body to get anything from a house to an education to attention for a charity is a fool not worthy of a brain.

seth October 8, 2011

seriously? it got cancelled by the parents tv council and the gang ? LOL…

All shows has its own morality and we can all learn from it, not by canceling it! this is simply another exhibit of ignorance with the public nowadays…

P.S … Please learn to deal with reality, if a part of life isn’t what you want, deal with it, not by throwing it down the drain!

oh well… we’re living in a liberal society. a group of ignorance will be the majority of ignorance… LOL

Melissa October 9, 2011

This was actually a show worth watching – what a shame that these feminist losers have to butt in as usual. This show had a fantastic shoreline and the actors were all good looking talented people. Why don’t you people worry what Obama is doing to our country instead of a TV show!

maxine October 9, 2011

ARE YOU KIDDING ME…..PPLAYBOY CLUB WAS ONLY CANCELLED BECAUSE OF ITS NAME AND THE FACT THAT IT WAS PROBABLY NOT WATCHED BECAUSE OF IT….IT IS 1961…AND DEPICTS WOMEN TRYING TO MAKE THEIR WAY AND DEFENDING THEMSELVES VERY NICELY AGAINST ANY EXPLOITATION…STEINEM WAS A PLAYBOY BUNNY …SPARE ME…WHEN THE CHOICES FOR WOMEN WERE LIMITED AND YOU WERE VIEWED BY YOU LOOKS SOME BECAME BUNNIES…IN NO WAY WAS THIS OFFENSIVE TO ME.WHAT ABOUT PAN AM…WILL THAT BE THE NEXT TO GO? ANOTHER COICE WOMEN HAD IN THE EARLY 60/S..I BACAME A TEACHER…I COULD NOT WEAR SLACKS TO CLASS AT A CITY UNIVERSITY UNLESS IT WAS BELOW 17 DEGREES AND WHEN MY FELLOW TEACHER AND I WORE TASTEFUL TUNIC AND SLACKS TO TEACH, THE ONLY TENURES TEACHERS TO DO SO, AGAINST THREATS FROM THE PRINCIPAL, WE WERE HARRASSED THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR..ONE TEACER TO OR DEFENSE WAS IMMEDIATELY FIRED AND THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL TOLD ME I LOOKE CUTE!! WHAT IT WAS!!! TELL IT ALL LIKE IT WAS!!

MAXINE October 9, 2011

I AM SOORY FOR SO MANY MISSPELLED WORDS,,I WROTE TOO QUICKLY…SO PLAYBOY, TENURED, TEACHER,OUR, LOOKED

carol taylor October 9, 2011

Has Dawn Hawkins of Morality In Media taken her medication?
This is America…freedom of speech…etc.
Has she seen JERSEY SHORE and reality television?Has she watched daily news shows????
If you don’t like a TV show turn it off….don’t make decisions for the rest of the country.

MICH October 9, 2011

I rarely watch anything live. I DVR all my shows. Does this mean I am hurting the ratings for all my shows? I really like this show. My wife and I watch it. I think controversial shows like this make for great TV and much better then yet another reality TV show or yet another talent show. Be different

Shawn October 9, 2011

GREAT! Another Government watchdaog stripping us of our rights. amd freedoms. This time it’s the 1st Amendment, next it’ll be the second. Oh wait, they already got that one too!

kelly October 9, 2011

Dawn Hawkins, get off your high horse and get a life! The playboy club was on late enough that only ADULTS should be watching and if kids were watching the show then maybe we should be looking to their parents instead of the programming. This show in no way glorified pornography, sex, or defiled women. It had maybe one sexual scene which is no more than most shows on public television. I think it was an entertaining show which gave the viewers a nice glimse into the 1960’s. I’m very disappointed in the cancellation of this show. As Carol has already mentioned why doesn’t Ms. Hawkins look into “The Jersey Shore”, now there’s a wholesome show!

Aubrey October 9, 2011

Although I absolutely loved the show, that is not the reason I am upset that it was cancelled. I’m upset because there is a double standard at work here. If The Playboy Club is too risque to be on television, then so is Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy to name a few. Watch any episode of those two shows and you will find more sex and immorality than in the three episodes of The Playboy Club put together. If we are going to start cleaning up television, lets just not be hypocrites please.

Umananda October 9, 2011

They cancelled it only because the title had the word “Playboy”. It’s a good serial and depicts the struggle of some women of 1960’s. And i agree with some of the above stating that if we’re to clean up then we should not be hypocrites.

Sasha October 9, 2011

It is ridiculous to cancel this show. I am so annoyed with NBC for not respecting the viewers that enjoyed the show. This was a part of history and whether you like it or not this is how it was in the 60’s. If you do not like it don’t watch it. Maybe all of these rappers that are grabbing their crotch should be taken off NBC as well.

Landen October 9, 2011

I think that its bullshit. If u don’t like a show dont watch it. Me and my wife loved watching the show. It had a great story line and seriously they wear more clothes than most reality tv shows.

Jessica Roberts October 9, 2011

Even here in the UK i absolutely loved this show and i am so upset they have cancelled it!!!! I don’t think it shows women being exploited for their bodies at all. If i was good at maths i would use it to my advantage in just the same way as if i was a beautiful woman!!!! And even still, ITS JUST A TV SHOW!!! i actually think this is quite a classy show( unlike the likes of Jersey Shore etc. These people need to grow a pair and stop being such prudes this is the 21st century not the 1800’s!

Alex October 9, 2011

What a shame, people have to grow up. This was part of history. Shows such as Weeds and Sons Of Anarchy show more violence and sex then this show did in the three episodes. I suggest Showtime or HBO pick it up and make it raw as life really was during that time. I’ll leave NBC and subscribe to the cable network that picks it up, any time!!!!!!

pissed October 9, 2011

WTF! this show is actually amazing! this show was based on a different TIME PERIOD! HELLO this obviously does not happen today in 2011! AND IF YOU DO NOT LIKE IT DO NOT WATCH IT! enough said!

AND ii definitely agree this is an HBO SERIES not show, not one hit wonder SERIES!!!

Jenny October 9, 2011

Thank you so much for your efforts in cancelling this show. I appreciate it, God appreciates it and women and men with an iq over 100 and any sense of decency or morality appreciate it! I was outraged when I heard about it and the young girls who don’t understand…some day hopefully you will when you realize that women are not objects, but are equal to men. Thanks again!!!!

Tureia October 9, 2011

I was devastated when I heard the show was cancelled. I must admit I prejudged the show, thinking it would be about pretty girls in bunny suits. But, after watching the first episode I was HOOKED and found the show quite interesting and honestly tastefully done. I looked forward to the next episodes, I was quite excited to see how things would unfold. Don’t let some uptight broads who regulate what their husbands watch let this show go down without a fight. Please

RED October 9, 2011

WOW I HATE IT. MY MOTHER WORKED AT PLAYBOY CLUB AS A BUNNY. I WOULD HAVE LIKE TO SEEN THE SHOW.I HATE IT WAS CANCELLED. HUGH HEFNER IS AN ICON. HE MADE HISTORY AND STILL IS.
PLAYBOY TAUGHT WOMEN TO BE SEXY FOR THEIR MEN… BUT AH I GUESS THOSE STRAIGHTO HOUSEWIVES WOULD HAVE RATHER LIKED THE BETTY CROCK SHOW TO COOK LOUSY FOOD FOR THEIR MAN THAN BE SEXY AND KEEP THEIR MAN. YOU EVER NOTICE MOST OF THE BEST LOOKING MEN ARE MARRIED TO OVERWEIGHT DOWNDRESSED WOMEN? COOKING SURE DIDNT KEEP THE MAN SEXY DID AND ALWAYS WILL. THANKS HUGH HEFNER BY KEEPING LOVE ALIVE AND KEEPING WOMEN LOOKING BEAUTIFUL AND WANTING TO BE….
