Principle ousted over Bible discipline action

Bible reading in public schools hasn’t taken place much in America for many years, but it happened not too long ago in this Oregon coastal city as a form of punishment.

And the fact that it did cost a school principal his job last month.

As reported by The World newspaper of Coos Bay, The Oregonian and Willamette Week, North Bend High School Principal Bill Lucero left his post as part of a settlement between the North Bend School District and American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Oregon.

Oregonians helping rebuild Puerto Rico

A Northwest team sent to serve as a feeding unit spent much time helping Puerto Rican residents dig out from the effects of Hurricane Maria.

Right to Try idea made national

President Trump signed a national Right to Try law, allowing terminally ill patients the right to try drugs that have gone through part of the FDA testing process but are not yet approved.

In 2015 Cascade Policy Institute helped craft Oregon’s Right to Try law, but with two troubling restrictions. First, patients must be 18 years of age or older; and second, “in a physician’s reasonable medical judgment” patients will die within six months.

Oregon clergy issue Palestinian rights statement

Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon,

Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO) supports the Palestinians’ right to demonstrate peacefully in their decades-long conflict with Israel, and we call for an end to violence in the region.

We believe that the decision by the current administration to unilaterally move the United States Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem was an unwise and prejudicial action that makes a peace settlement even more difficult to achieve, and that this decision has led to more violence. We are indeed seeing the tragic results of the move, which dashed the decades-long hope of the Palestinians for a shared capital of two states in Jerusalem.
