How media inflates-deflates Catholics

July 26, 2018 --

By Catholic League for Civil and Religious Rights

Last week, Pope Francis commented on problems at the U.S. border. “During the Obama years I celebrated Mass at Ciudad Juárez, while on the other side of the border 50 bishops concelebrated, and in the stadium there were many people. The problem already existed there. It’s not just an issue with Trump, but goes back to prior governments.”

Why wasn’t this headline news? If the pope had unfavorably compared President Trump to President Obama it would have been. Thanks to Thomas D. Williams and Carl E. Olson, two astute Catholic journalists, we know about it.

Of the many fine young men I’ve gotten to know through the ministry of Pro Athletes Outreach (PAO), quarterback Nick Foles stands out as one of those most serious in his Christian faith. (See my past blog on Nick and Case Keenum, as well as some of Nick’s Eagles teammates who know and love Jesus.)

Recently Nick’s new book Believe It: My Journey of Success, Failure and Overcoming the Odds, was released. As of this Sunday it will debut at #5 on the New York Times Best Sellers list! With Josh Cooley’s able help, Nick has told his story in a unique and memorable way that can be enjoyed by avid football fans and not so avid ones. I loved this book, which has excellent stories, honesty, and life lessons from a brother in Christ who is the real deal.

Are your kids secretly Juuling?

July 18, 2018 --

By M. Martin,

Parents, physicians, and school officials are growing concerned as more teenagers potentially damage their health by “juuling,” inhaling puffs of nicotine from discrete electronic cartridges resembling flash drives.

Each JUUL pod, or cartridge, contains the same amount of nicotine as found in a pack of cigarettes, about 200 puffs, according to a recent Today article. Students can blow smoke rings with the nicotine-laced vapor.

A Pennsylvania school district last month banned flash drives because they look like the JUUL e-cigarettes, which students could puff on without teachers realizing it.

Bible reading in public schools hasn’t taken place much in America for many years, but it happened not too long ago in this Oregon coastal city as a form of punishment.

And the fact that it did cost a school principal his job last month.

As reported by The World newspaper of Coos Bay, The Oregonian and Willamette Week, North Bend High School Principal Bill Lucero left his post as part of a settlement between the North Bend School District and American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Oregon.

Right to Try idea made national

July 3, 2018 --

Cascade Policy Institute

President Trump signed a national Right to Try law, allowing terminally ill patients the right to try drugs that have gone through part of the FDA testing process but are not yet approved.

In 2015 Cascade Policy Institute helped craft Oregon’s Right to Try law, but with two troubling restrictions. First, patients must be 18 years of age or older; and second, “in a physician’s reasonable medical judgment” patients will die within six months.
